Wolff Preparing to Divest Stake Valuing Mercedes Formula 1 Team at £4.6 Billion

Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to sell part of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal estimates the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – an unprecedented figure for a Formula 1 squad – following the McLaren team was appraised at £3.5bn in a change of corporate structure last September.

Wolff, who holds one-third of Mercedes F1, would sell a shareholding approximately five percent.

The 53-year-old will remain as team principal and chief executive officer should the deal proceed.

Ownership Breakdown

Remaining partners in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes-Benz and chemicals giant Ineos Group, who each also own a third of the company.

An official representative said: "We are providing no official statement on the matter. The management structure of Mercedes F1 stays unchanged, and each shareholder are fully committed to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in Formula One."

Financial Growth

This arrangement signifies a substantial rise in worth of Mercedes F1 after Ineos acquired its stake for £208 million in 2022.

This surge demonstrates the expansion in valuations of Formula 1 outfits in the past few years due to the growing popularity of the sport globally.

This was also seen in the success of the Formula 1 film featuring Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and earned over $630 million (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing film and the highest-earning sports film ever released.

Current Standings

The Mercedes team are second in the team standings, behind McLaren, with three races remaining this season.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has won two of the 21 grands prix this year and is in fourth place in the individual standings after McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The team won a record eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, between 2014 and 2021.
