Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
